Linda' story -
I am 55 years old and based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. My father is a medical doctor, so as an asthmatic/atopic child and young adult I had all the latest asthma medications as soon as they were available. My symptoms had been under control for years - I avoided fur, feathers and pollen as much as possible and just used anti-histamines and a little reliever medication when necessary. Then in my 40's it all started again - I had three winters with bronchitis and a couple of summers with awful hay-fever - back to childhood illness levels and increased use of reliever medication. For two years my skin used to blow up in recurrent episodes of weeping, incredibly itchy and painful urticaria, reaching from my thighs to my forehead. In January 1999 I suffered my third chest infection of the winter leading to an asthma attack I couldn't control. After a trip to the Emergency Room where I was put on nebulisers and hydrocortisone, I was admitted to Warwick Hospital and kept in for 10 days. What wonderful treatment I received from the Consultants and ward staff - and what a wonderful rest I was able to have - I just hadn't realised how chronically exhausted I had become - I suppose. I have now observed this over and over again with other asthma sufferers - that you just get used to having horrible symptoms and learn to live with them.
I left hospital on a large daily dose of inhaled steroids, which I hadn't used since childhood, plus various skin creams, and steroid and reliever inhalers. This calmed everything down but I felt it wasn't solving the underlying problem . I had heard good things about Buteyko from some contacts in the US, then from friends in Birmingham whose children had had wonderful results from a Buteyko course, so I looked into it.
The whole Buteyko theory made such sense. It explained why the allopathic medicine couldn't help me in the long-term - I simply had to help myself. So in April 1999 I took a Buteyko breathing course in London with Alexander Stalmatsky. The exercises reduced my symptoms drastically, meaning I didn't need to use so much Ventolin. Since that time I have had absolutely no problems with my skin. The improvements in my energy levels and general health were so amazing that in 2000 I decided to train as a Practitioner. I have found over the past 7 years such satisfaction in being able to use my own experience of normalising the breathing to help people overcome the same awful symptoms as I had - something good has come out of all that illness!
My Practitioner training was with Russell and Jennifer Stark, from New Zealand, who trained with Alexander Stalmatsky then set up a practitioner training course. My training lasted approximately 9 months and involved reading and written assignments, and included an intensive month of observation of at least 50 clients and supervised teaching followed by an assessment period until the first 50 clients had been taught. Over the past 6 years I have successfully taught more than 6500 people of all ages and with all degrees of breathing difficulties.
